Wright, Binns & Lancaster: Weekend review 30th June & 1st July

Saturday 30th June

It was a busy day in Sweden with three players getting on the scoresheet but only two of the strikes were at the right end.

In the second tier, former Chelsea defender Kevin Wright scored an absolute cracker from outside the box as his side Degerfors beat Frej 3-1. The goal was the 22-year-old’s second of the season.

Elsewhere in the same division, Netan Sansara‘s Gefle managed to secure a 2-2 draw, despite Sansara scoring an own goal after just two minutes.

In the third tier, Ryan Binns scored another penalty as his side pulled off a huge win against a relegation rival. Husqvarna’s 2-1 win over Grebbestad meant Binns’ side moved to just a point from safety. The penalty was Binns’ fifth goal in his last eight games.

Sunday 1st July

In Finland’s third tier, Danny O’Brien provided an assist for SJK U23s as they defeated top of the league JS Hercules to move to within just two points of the promotion play-off spot. The 4-2 victory for SJK stopped a run of four consecutive wins for Hercules, although O’Brien could well find himself back in the first team before too long.

Over in the States, Cameron Lancaster bagged a brace to take his tally to ten goals for the season. The Louisville City striker scored twice as his side drew 2-2 with New York Red Bulls II in the USL. His first goal was a sensational strike from near the halfway line.

In the women’s top flight, Jodie Taylor scored the only goal of the game as Seattle Reign beat Portland Thorns 1-0.
