Let’s start, as we so often do, in Sweden where Östersunds continue to go from strength to strength despite the departure of Graham Potter last month. They defeated Trelleborg 4-1 to go to fifth in the table and continue Ian Burchnall’s unbeaten start as the new manager of ÖFK. Both Curtis Edwards and Jamie Hopcutt were on the scoresheet on a very pleasing afternoon for Östersunds fans.
Over in the States, Wayne Rooney made his first start for DC United but there was no fairy tale start for the former England international as he was booked ans subbed off in the 66th minute during a 3-1 loss to Atlanta United.
Jodie Taylor did have a good day in America though, as her sixth goal of the season secured a 1-1 draw for Seattle Reign against Orlando Pride in front of a crowd of over 5,000.
Sunday 22nd July
Callum Williams‘ first ever league goal in Iceland was the highlight as KA thrashed Fylkir 5-1 in the top flight. Williams, in his fourth season playing for KA, finally scored his first goal for the club in what was his 63rd league appearance for the side.
In the women’s top flight in America, Rachel Daly‘s only goal of the game meant Houston Dash came away with all three points defeating Washington Spirit 1-0. It was the England internationals seventh of the season.
In men’s football, Bradley Wright-Phillips made it five goals in his last seven games as New York Red Bulls won 2-0 against New England Revolution.
In the second tier, the USL, Cameron Lancaster made it into double figures for the season as he came of the bench to score his tenth league goal of the season for Louisville City rounding off a 4-0 win over Charlotte Independence.
Also in the USL, Jack Barmby scored for Portland Timbers II but they lost 2-1 at home to Las Vegas Lights and Callum Ross picked up an assist in OKC Energy’s 1-1 draw with Sacramento Republic
Charlie Ward scored his first ever goal after more than 40 USL appearances to help guide San Antonio to a 4-2 win over Real Monarchs. It was well worth the wait as the below video shows.
Finally, Borussia Dortmund started two Englishmen in their 3-1 win over Liverpool in an International Champions Cup match in North Carolina. Both Jadon Sancho and Denzeil Boadu played the first half with the match being the latter’s first appearance for the first team.
