Friday 27th April
It was a relatively quiet Friday for Englishmen abroad but it is no doubt who the star man was. Tom Hateley, son of former England international Mark, is now in his second spell playing in Poland and he put in a man of the match performance for his side Piast Gliwice on Friday. He scored a penalty and picked up an assist as his side cruised to a 5-1 away win over Arka Gdynia in the Polish top division. It was the former Motherwell man’s first goal since moving back to Poland.
Elsewhere, defender Netan Sansara helped his side Gefle to earn a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with GAIS in Sweden’s second tier.
Saturday 28th April
We start in the Netherlands where regular season action in the Eerste Divisie (second tier) came to an end. Todd Cantwell‘s loan spell at Fortuna Sittard has been a massive success, with the Norwich City loanee becoming a firm fan favourite and he rounded off his spell overseas with an assist for the only goal of the game as his side beat Jong PSV to secure promotion back to the Eredivisie.
Aaron Nemane was on the scoresheet for Go Ahead Eagles but could not prevent them losing 2-1 to Den Bosch.
And finally in the Netherlands, Dan Crowley played the full ninety as his side Cambuur secured a 1-0 win and passage through to the promotion playoffs.
In Belgium, Chupa Akpom scored the fourth goal of his loan spell to help Sint-Truiden beat KV Oostende 4-1.
Over in Iceland, it was the first week of the season and five Englishmen were involved in Úrvalsdeild (top tier) action. It was more of the same for Sam Hewson, Archange Nkumu and Callum Williams who started their eighth, fourth and fourth seasons respectively in Iceland. At the other end of the scale, former England U17 international Priestley Griffiths made his league debut for ÍBV and former Leeds United youngster Henry Rollinson was also on the bench for ÍBV.
In the States, Mo Adams made it back to back full ninties for Chicago Fire as they drew 2-2 with Toronto.
The Valdres gang kept up their amazing start to the season in Norway’s fourth tier as they made it five wins from five in all competitions with a 2-1 away in over Lillestrøm 2. Dominic McGiveron was the hero as his last gasp goal secured the victory.
Sunday 29th April
What a season young Mason Mount is having on loan at Vitesse. The 19-year-old Chelsea loanee scored and assisted in Vitesse’s 5-0 win to condemn Twente to relegation. It was the England U19 international’s ninth league goal of the season in what is his first season of senior football. To cap off a great day for the English youngster, he was also voted as the club’s Player of the Season!
Also on the scoresheet on Sunday was Nick Blackman who goes from strength to strength for Israeli giants Maccabi Tel-Aviv with his ninth goal of the season helping his side draw 2-2 with Hapoel Haifa.
Cameron Lancaster also kept up his fine form for Louisville City in America’s second tier, the USL, with two goals in a 3-1 win over Bethlehem Steel.
In MLS, Bradley Wright-Phillips picked up two assists as the New York Red Bulls overcome LA Galaxy 3-2 at the StubHub Center.
In Norway, three Englishmen were involved in one game in the second tier but it was Sogndal’s Reiss Greenidge who came out on top with a 2-0 win over Michael Ledger‘s Notodden. Sunderland loanee Josh Robson was also on the bench for Notodden.
